About the event

About the play:

This play is a challenge due to its rupture, hilariousness and grotesque humor for the actors and for me as a director. It strikes me because of the apparent simplicity of its language that is permeated by current debates about the ambition and excess of the power of rulers of an imaginary society that often resembles ours.

King Ubu (Ubu roi) is a play by French author Alfred Jarry that premiered on December 10, 1896 at the Théâtre de L'Oeuvre, Paris. From this premiere, the theater underwent definitive changes, thus breaking with a strong tradition by renewing both dramatic writing and staging concepts. This made Alfred Jarry one of the most important precursors of Surrealism, Dadaism and the theater of the absurd. In King Ubú, this emblematic character from the work of Alfred Jarry is presented for the first time, revealing the sublimation of tyranny and unlimited ambition, in a cruel and cowardly character. The character of Ubú, cartoonish and ostentatious in all its physical dimensions, revealing the spiral in his belly (symbol of his absolute egocentrism), becomes the central character in Alfred Jarry's work. The development of the story and the characteristics of Ubú reveal a satirical parody of William Shakespeare's Macbeth.
