My course will be about musicality within text and acting. The course is about the musical approach of a theatre text and the musical use of your body and voice as an instrument. Before I go any further, I should like to emphasise that it is not a matter of playing a musical or singing class. This course is about intonation and meaning formation of the text on the basis of musicality! On the basis of several exercises, we will investigate how musicality comes about and how you can use this musicality to give the text or the scene a certain meaning. Your voice and body are the instruments we are going to work with. Within the course, the development of a more dynamic and varied form of acting is the basic principle. On the basis of different scenes from a script, different (experimental) music tracks and “musicality-cards” we will explore a freer and more varied way of acting.

The text I am going to use is: ‘Crave’ from Sarah Kane. It is a very rhythmical and poetical theatre text.
The music tracks will be diverse.
The “musicality-cards” are as it were the basis technique. Those cards are just paper cards with musical terms on it. Like; Staccato, Legato, crescendo, decrescendo, High, Low, Fast, slow. The terms on the cards determine the way of speaking and your intonation. The cards will be used in different forms and exercises during the course.

The first class will be about getting to know each other and getting to know musicality and theatre. It will be about what intonation and using your voice means for the meaning of the scene. From the second lesson on, we will work with different fragments of the text Crave from Sarah Kane. On the basis of the ‘Musicality-cards’, you will learn the basis of the possible ways of intonation and ways to speak in a fun and free way. Depending on the progress, we will change the text fragment a couple of times. The second part of this course will be about the influence of music on speaking. In this part, we are going to investigate what it means to speak with and speak against the music. Later on in the course, maybe the last four or three lessons we will combine the first and second way of working and we will be working towards a small presentation.
